How to Undo Knots on the End of Your Braids

Pulling at knotted strands of hair at the end of your braids can be painful, as it tugs at your scalp. If your hair is knotted, there are some tried-and-true ways to untangle the hair strands. The process of detangling the hair strands will often take multiple attempts, and you are likely to tear some of the hair as you pull it out of the knot. You can reduce the amount of breakage by applying the correct conditioning solution beforehand.

Instructions

Remove any rubber bands or hair ties from the end of the braid. If the hair is tangled around the tie, you may need to cut it away from the hair with scissors.

Dry the hair completely. Wet hair is more sensitive to detangling effort and will often result in more hair shedding.

Saturate the knot at the end of the braid with hair detangler solution or hair grease. This will help loosen the strands from the knot. Use your fingers to distribute the solution throughout the knot.

Hold the end of the braid and begin combing out the knot with a wide-tooth comb. Holding the end of the braid will keep you from tugging on the scalp.

Comb the knot with a fine-tooth comb to further detangle the hair. Add more detangler as needed.
